We
are delighted that you wish to have your child baptised and we hope that
we can help you with the preparations and service on your child’s special
day.
Can my child be
baptised?
Yes, of course! Everyone has a
right to baptism, no matter what their circumstances. Parents
bringing a child for baptism promise to bring the child up as a Christian
within the family of the church. So, if you attend church regularly, and
you or your parents live for at least part of the year within the
chaplaincy, please arrange a meeting with the chaplain to discuss
details.
When will the
service be?
Baptism is normally part of the
Sunday church service, which usually lasts about an hour or so. We will
visit you - or you can come to us - before the day to talk in more detail
about what happens.
What about
Godparents?
There is no magic number of
godparents. Choosing the right people is more important than number;
three or four is typical. Godparents make promises with the parents,
for the child and for themselves, to help the child grow in faith. They
should all have been baptised, and they should be adults. Godparents should
be people who will be around for your child, people who might be able to
help and support them appropriately.
What if we are
not married, or are divorced, or a one-parent family?
We understand that families come in
all shapes and sizes. We try not to judge or discriminate. We are
honoured that you want to be with us on this important day in the life of
your child.
How much does it
cost?
Baptism is free: God's gift to every
person. We do not expect any payment. If you want to make a donation to
the work of the chaplaincy, we welcome that.
How do we apply?
Please ask for an application form
from the Chaplaincy Secretary. This must be completed and received by her
at least 4 months prior to the anticipated date of the church
ceremony in order to ensure that the Minister and the church building are
available and all the formalities completed.
